In this practice, you will be going back to uncover those moments when our anger tried to tell us something, but we didn’t have permission to listen.

Anger is no more or less powerful than any other emotion. However, in many cultures, family systems, and teachings, we are told that Anger is a dangerous, violent, negative emotion that we should avoid, suppress, or deny.

When we avoid, suppress, or deny our emotions, they don’t leave us. They build inside of us, and manifest in physical pain, difficulty connecting to self and others, and can eventually overflow or lead us to “explode” emotionally and experience breakdowns.

Anger, like any emotion, is information.

Emotions are somatic responses to our environment and experiences, and they provide us with clues as to how to act, react, or process what is happening in our lives.

Anger is communicating something: whether it’s communicating to us our boundaries have been violated or that we have been betrayed or disrespected, it is information and we must pay attention to it.

When we aren’t given opportunities to feel our anger as it arises in the moment, we hold on to it, and the information it seeks to tell us gets locked away too.

Once old anger has the chance to be heard, received, and responded to, we can start to integrate this practice in the moment and begin listening and responding to anger as it arises in the present moment.

You can use this practice repeatedly--in fact I encourage it. Use this practice weekly or multiple times a week to assist you in releasing old anger that has been trapped inside of you.
